Let’s be just a little kinder to each other, while we can

(A total of 38 people were killed in a ferry collison in Hong Kong two days ago.)

A former student, a young teacher, experienced the saddest day of her teaching career, as one of her students was involved in the ferry collison. I recall how some years ago I learnt from the news of the passing away, in an accident, of a former student who, while she was living, had often shared her joys and dreams and worries with me.
In our daily hustle and bustle, we often forget how fragile human lives can be. We live as if all other people, and we ourselves, would live forever. We fill our days with indifference, if not anger or hatred, towards other people. But no, even a most mundane accident on a most mundane day can take away a life. While we are here, let us be a little kinder to each other, and to ourselves.

  1. Dr Sze, Thanks for your kind reminder! It’s really true but most easily forgotten when we are getting busy. Jesus said: ‘Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.’ (Matthew 5:44).’Love your neighbour as you love yourself.’ (Matthew 22:37-39) and ‘do for others what you want them to do for you’ (Matthew 7:12). Life is full of uncertainty. We, as human, may not be able to alter God’s own plan, but we can always be kind to those we love and to those who dislike us before it’s too late.
