I recently gave a teachers workshop at this school. The principal handed me a copy of the school’s prospectus. Inside the very front cover of the prospectus is the picture below, of the school’s teaching staff, subtitled ‘Teachers with Professionalism Teach Students with Enthusiasm’. Although I don’t know much about the school, their recognition of the place of teachers blows me away.
Teachers will give their work their best if they feel they are being valued, and cared about. If they’re simply treated as employees, or worse still, as slaves because they have no bargaining power, they will not go all out in their work. A school management style that relies on staff appraisal will not do much in terms of drawing the best from teachers. Appraisal is necessary, but more importantly, care about teachers, value them, and take pride in them.
