Paul Sze was formerly a senior lecturer and is currently an adjunct assistant professor at the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, Faculty of Education, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). His professional career has centred around English Language education. Prior to joining CUHK in 1991, he had served as a secondary school teacher, an inspector of schools with the Hong Kong government, and a lecturer at Northcote College of Education . His teaching and research interests include ELT methodology, phonics, phonetics and phonology, the teaching of speaking, and computer-assisted language learning. Paul has been a recipient of the Exemplary Teaching Award of the CUHK Faculty of Education on 3 occasions, and in 2006, was honoured with the Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award. He has presented his work at TESOL Convention and several major conferences in Europe and Southeast Asia. His publications include journal articles, book chapters, as well as ELT materials for learners. He is also keen to write for the general public, having co-authored two books and two newspaper columns on language awareness, and single-authored a column on young children’s learning of English in a parents’ magazine. Besides speaking frequently at professional development events for teachers in Hong Kong, southern China, and Macao, Paul is also keen to apply technology in conducting teacher development. He has developed the first video-based lesson observation platform for primary English teachers in Hong Kong and a phonics teaching website, and designed a remote video-conferenced peer lesson observation project for teachers in Foshan, China, and Hong Kong. He has been active in serving the education community in Hong Kong, and has been Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Educational Research Association, and founding chairman of the Hong Kong Basic Competency Assessment (English) test development committee. He has provided ELT consultancy services for the education authorities in Guangzhou and Macao. He is currently a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Linguists and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He can be contacted at
